Iron Oxides Particles in Globus Pallidus of Human Brain

چکیده
Iron is essential element used for fundamental cell functions, catalyst for chemical reaction. We used scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive microanalysis, electron diffraction, UV and EPR measurements for investigation of iron particles in globus pallidus of human brain. Scanning electron microscopy revealed iron rich complexes with Na, Si, P, S, Cl, Ca and Cu. Transmission electron microscopy revealed bumpy, solid particles of platy and sometimes rounded shape with the size around 3 μm. These ones were identified as hematite. Spectral measurements showed the presence of Fe(III), Cu(II) and some amount of Fe(II). We consider low-temperature process of hematite formation in human globus pallidus by aggregation-dehydration-rearragement in aqueous environment through ferrihydrite influenced by organic and inorganic factors.

Relationship between brain R(2) and liver and serum iron concentrations in elderly men.
Studies of iron overload in humans and animals suggest that brain iron concentrations may be related in a regionally specific way to body iron status. However, few quantitative studies have investigated the associations between peripheral and regional brain iron in a normal elderly cohort. To examine these relationships, we used MRI to measure the proton transverse relaxation rate (R(2)) in 13 ...

Introduction: Parkinson'sdisease isassociated withirondeposition in the brain. The T2-weighted imaging, T2* mapping, R2 mapping and Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) are three common methods to evaluating the iron deposition in brain. Among three methods the QSM is more sensitive than others. Few studies have been used QSM for evaluating the iron deposition in the basa...

Hallervorden Spatz Disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder with the prevalence of one to three per million. The onset of symptoms is usually in late childhood and early adolescence. However, some cases of the disease were reported in adulthood which could be familial or sporadic. The familial cases are autosomal-recessive resulting from mutation in the pantothenate kinase 2 gene located on...
متن کاملGlobus pallidus: a target brain region for divalent metal accumulation associated with dietary iron deficiency.
Recently, iron deficiency has been connected with a heterogeneous accumulation of manganese in the rat brain. The striatum is particularly vulnerable, for there is a significant negative correlation between accumulated manganese and gamma-aminobutyric acid levels. The effect of dietary iron deficiency on the distribution of zinc and copper, two other divalent metals with essential neurobiologic...
متن کاملIron levels in the human brain: a post-mortem study of anatomical region differences and age-related changes.
The link between brain iron homeostasis and neurodegenerative disease has been the subject of extensive research. There is increasing evidence of iron accumulation during ageing, and altered iron levels in some specific brain regions in neurodegenerative disease patients have been reported. Using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave-assisted acid digestion of the samp...
